Contest!!! What's it doing???

Here's a question for you: what is this dragonfly doing?
There is a certain term that describes this silly looking behavior. If you know it, leave a comment and you could win one of my baby monsters!
Comments will be moderated so you can't see the other guesses. Please leave either your etsy name or email address so I may contact you if you win. Everyone with a correct answer will be put into a drawing, with a name picked at random. The baby monster will also be chosen at random.

Contest will end Tuesday (April 1st), at 10pm EST.

Good luck!

  12. The term is obelisking or oblisk posture. They do this to prevent overheating on sunny days.

  13. it's the obelisk posture, and they do it to prevent overheating by minimizing the surface of their body the sun hits (how freaking cool!)

I had to look it up, but I'm glad I did :)

  16. Just found your blog and shop - so cute!! Here is what I could find with the power of Google. Am I right?

"In hot, sunny weather it is important that dragonflies don’t overheat. Cooling strategies include becoming less active, moving into shade and changing their body position. The obelisk position orients the dragonfly’s abdomen directly at the sun, thereby reducing the surface area exposed to solar heating. Some dragonflies also point their wings forward and down in order to reduce exposure to sunlight and, perhaps, to reflect light and heat away from their bodies."

  18. Oooh, ooh, i know this one! It's the obelisk position! They do it to minimize the area of their bodies that the sun is hitting on hot days so they don't cook in their little exoskeletons.
